How can I connect when I'm so busy?

From the beginning of my executive coaching practice two decades ago, leaders have brought the issue of “presence” as a dilemma they want to address.
It just came up again this morning: “How can I explain to people that it’s not that I don’t care about them, it’s just that I don’t have time to come to their offices to chat.”
Busy-ness because of the increasing speed of business puts intense pressure on every executive’s schedule—and very, very often, relationships with our peers and staff get squeezed out. The risk to us as leaders: becoming an oxymoron being a leader who doesn’t have quality relationships.
For me, the quality of relationships is a big-time determiner of the quality of the leader—a criteria for credibility. It’s also the right thing to do. And it can be a great experience. How so?
Well, to turn the time dilemma into a “great experience” requires the right state of mind. We need to check out our thinking first. Will making time for important people around us be a “thing we have to do”? Something to check off the list? A burden?
Shouldn’t be.
When I am thinking right, I understand that time with a teammate is an interesting experience that can enhance both of us. Even in a fire-minute conversation, we can affirm that we matter to each other; or find out what’s truly going on in each other’s lives that’s important.
Taking that time to really listen and give some interpersonal energy will send the message that that other person matters to me. To the whole organization. That the person is a person—not merely an employee.
So, I can get a quick cup of coffee from the kitchen right next to my office, or get it up front in the greeting area and pass several people in the hall and in their offices on the way. I will be investing some energy, not wasting time, and will be spending moments with some real fine people who deserve the time and attention. I will be a leader living out my principle. And I will be a friend.
Oh, just want you to know…writing this just reminded me that it’s been a while since I took my admin to lunch. I’ve decided not to be too busy for that important person. The email, sent moments ago: “Time to check-in, Jen. Pick an interesting spot for lunch.”
