The professionals at McArdle Ramerman practice leadership and business coaching and consulting. We are not psychotherapists. We're sometimes aked about the differences between coaching, consulting and psychotherapy. Here's our perspective:
Coaching
Coaching is an ongoing conversational and explorational process aimed at changing behavior. It assumes that solutions can be found within the mind of the client. Its goal is not healing or an examination of past experience as it affects current attitudes. Instead, coaches ask open-ended questions. We encourage clients to look inside themselves for answers that might be hidden from view or require the logical connection of facts already available to our clients.
When you find yourself struggling to answer a difficult open-ended question that leads to a new perspective and behavioral change, you are probably being coached.
Consulting
Consultants offer knowledge, talent and / or expertise not yet available to clients. Consulting complements coaching, which seeks answers within the client. When the client is asking questions and seeking answers, the person on the other end of that conversation is probably acting as a consultant.
At McArdle Ramerman, each of our coach / consultants brings unique knowledge, talents and experience. When we believe that information will help a client reach a breakthrough goal and has exhausted his / her own resources, we provide the consulting required for that next step.
Psychotherapy
At McArdle Ramerman, we are very clear about the boundaries of our practice. We are not licensed to practice psychotherapy and avoid therapeutic approaches to client issues. Occasionally, we might notice that a client could be dealing with issues beyond our charter. When that is the case, we encourage that client to find a professional licensed and able to verify that a therapeutic relationship is in order.
